The Surrey Branch of the Fly Dressers Guild had a trip to Chalk Springs, Andover last Sunday. Ernie and I went down as well but left later, arriving about 11:00. We had already missed the catching of a monster which weighed in at 14Lbs 3ozs.
We purchased five fish between the two of us. Unfortunately the fishing was very hard and the water being crystal clear, made it even more difficult. Frustrating as well, seeing fish approach your fly and at the last moment just turn away. I hooked a 2Lbs 10ozs fish eventually on a Black Bead Tailed Zonker. It was interesting to see it being taken and does explain to me the tugs that are sometimes felt before the fish finally takes the fly. It appeared almost to be playing with it just as a cat will play with a mouse before killing it.
The second fish I caught was 2Lbs 3ozs again on the same fly, but this was late afternoon before this happened. Ernie unfortunately didn't catch a thing, not even a cold.
The previous Monday we both attended our first fly tying lesson. Not an easy thing tying these tiny insects. Today we went and got some materials and tools. We have our second lesson this Monday.
