Sunday saw the annual Bar-B-Que of the Surrey Flydressers Guild which happened to be at one of our favourite waters, Frensham. Ernie and I got there at about 11am and there were a lot of people there already. We had never seen that many fishers there at any time.
Quite a few had already caught there limit and were fishing catch and release. Others had hooked fish and not managed to get them to the bank to land them. Ernie caught one but had caught it in the dorsal fin. I had seen one fish in a small pool at the end of the top lake but every time I moved and put a fly in the water I spooked it. I used a Black Flash Damsel and just dabbed it up and down in the pool. Each time the fish looked at it and turned away. I persisted for some time and eventually it went for it but like a lot of people I did not managed to keep the hook in. I managed to get a couple of tugs on the same fly in a different part of the lake but nothing more.
We had the Bar-B-Que late afternoon and a lot of effort had been put in to provide a good spread. We took along a side of smoked trout that we had caught at Vale End on Monday, we had our fill and the rest disappeared very quickly.
I fished after eating and got several rolls on a dry Mayfly but no takes. All in all, with wonderful weather, everyone had a very pleasant day.
